Genealogy

The genealogy section of Tulare Public Library began in the fall of 1969 when the Alta Mira Chapter of the DAR deeded their collection of lineage books, magazines and other reference materials to the library. The first workers were DAR volunteers who were on-call to assist patrons in using the materials. In 1970, the Tulare Adult School funded personnel for the room for Wednesdays only.

In 1976, the Sequoia Genealogical Society (SGS) received an endowment from the Inez Hyde estate, which designated that it be utilized for a genealogy research center in Tulare County. The society entered into a contract with the City of Tulare to combine its resources with those of the Tulare library and a new liaison was formed. Since that time, the society has purchased books and other materials forming one of the largest collections of genealogical materials between Los Angeles and San Francisco. The goal of the SGS is to provide genealogical researchers with a rich variety of resources to trace their family history.

The genealogy section consists of books, microfilm, microfiche, compact disks, and (at present) one online patron computer. Patrons may also view the Tulare Advance Register newspaper on microfilm from 1882 to 2004.
Later copies are still in paper format. Vertical Files, Yearbooks, and Polk Directories are also available.

The books in the genealogy collection are shelved in subject order.
There are some mini collections of books within the larger collection.
These are the Hyde II Circ Collection and the Fancher Collection.

Volunteers are the core workers of this section. These dedicated folk compile a lot of the records including the vast collection of Tulare obituaries, which facilitate Tulare County Research.
