Permission is not required to use an image provided that it is used for educational purposes as outlined in the "fair use" clause of the U.S. Copyright Law (Title 17 § 107 U.S.C). Use for educational purposes in this case means printing, downloading, or linking to an image from another web page "for purposes such as ... teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research..."
The use of an image for any other purpose may be prohibited by copyright law. It is solely the responsibility of the user to determine whether use of a particular image is protected by copyright, and to obtain permission from the copyright owner in the case that it is.
