Technology Plan for July 1, 2001 - June 30, 2004
Strategic Goal #2:
To promote a minimum standard of public service at all library branches in the SJVLS.
Objective #1: Provide a Wide Area Network that supplies each branch with sufficient bandwidth to meet its needs for access to system servers and the Internet while maintaining network security.
- Project 2.1.1. Upgrade the existing wide area network to provide each branch with a minimum 20KBPS for each Web-browsing device.
- Project 2.1.2. Upgrade connection from SJVLS to the Internet to fractional DS3.
- Project 2.1.3. Connect all bookmobiles to the WAN wherever a method is available which would be cost effective and provide an acceptable quality of service.
Objective #2: Encourage a system minimum standard for software and hardware.
- Project 2.2.1. Develop a system standard for software on staff workstations. Define a standard for software available to the public at each branch.
- Project 2.2.2. Develop a more effective planning process to facilitate coordinated purchasing to ensure an affordable price of software and hardware.
- Project 2.2.3. Define a system standard for minimum hardware platforms.
- Project 2.2.4. Work with system members to develop hardware replacement plans.
Objective #3: Provide a base level of training of information technology to all branch public service staff.
- Project 2.3.1 Provide resources such as WebCT or Blackboard to present online instruction. Train SJVIS and other interested library staff in it's use.
Objective #4: Negotiate system-wide purchases of Web-based basic resources, such as an online encyclopedia and a basic magazine index.
