SJVLS Children's and Youth Services Committee Meeting August 18, 1999, Kings County Library, Hanford Present: Theresa Goedde, Kings County Georgia Wages, Kern County Sonja Kreitzer, Porterville County Heidi Clark, Tulare City Dolly Irvin, Tulare County Cynthia McDonald, Fresno County Kelley Worman, Fresno County I. RAZZLE DAZZLE READ! - The summer reading program for 2000, was discussed. It was agreed that Cynthia will get quotes for artwork from Fresno and Georgia would do the same for Bakersfield. [ Note: since the meeting Cynthia, Georgia and Theresa have been working on proposals for the Administrative Council and are in the process of acquiring bids.] Summer reading packets for each jurisdiction would include: 1) Logo with free use for each jurisdiction; 2) Reading log for each jurisdiction; 3) Camera-ready copy; 4) Posters. A date for an additional meeting was set for October 20 [meeting has since been cancelled.] II. REFERENCE CORE LIST - Postponed until December meeting. III. WORKSHOPS - Kern County will be offering two upcoming workshops: 1) Teen Scene, September 17, 9 a.m.-12:00 noon. Monique King, a YALSA trainer, will be doing a session on customer service towards teens. 2) Storytime 1A, October 1, 9:15 a.m. Kern County staff members will be doing a short training session on various elements of a successful storytime program. IV. PROGRAMMING IDEAS/NEW BOOKS - Kern County: 1) Guiena Pig's Tail 2) Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up Her Wash - Weeks, Sarah. Actually hung articles of clothing up as the story was being told. 3)Our Only May Amelia - Holm, Jennifer. Kings County: 1) Whose Mouse Are You - Arrego, Jose. Big Book format, Cynthia uses mouse puppet to help tell story. 2) Dr. Seuss program - children helped tell the story of the Sneetches and acted out various parts. They also played "Dr. Seuss says..." Theresa prepared green eggs which the children enjoyed, and they paraded through the library. Fresno County: 1) Martina Cockroach - Cynthia and Kelley did a very quick impromptu of how they told the story during their summer reading program. Porterville City: 1) Sonja brought patterns that she used for The Very Hungry Caterpillar. She used a green sock as the caterpillar puppet. 2) Sonja also brought handouts of materials that could be used for a Madeline birthday party. V. ANNOUNCEMENTS/DISCUSSIONS - 1) Theresa passed around system information regarding ILL's. 2) Committee members discussed the possibility of inviting various electronic resource vendors to our December 1 meeting. It is hoped that the System will be able to acquire something equivalent to InfoTrac or another periodical database that is intended for and usable by children. Cynthia will pursue this. 3) Congratulations to the following locations on receiving the State Youth Services Grant [apologies for any branches omitted]: Clovis - $10,000 Reedley - $10,000 Pinedale - $5,000 Porterville - $10,000 Visalia - $10,000 Ridgecrest - $5,000 Wilson Road - $5,000 Kern River Valley - $5,000 The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 1, 1999, 9:00 a.m. at Fresno County Library, Fresno.
