SJVLS Collection Development Committee
July 23, 1999

Present: Melanie Wells, Porterville; Stan Matli, Madera; Lydia Kuhn, 
Fresno; Judy Baumgardner, SJVIS; Michael Stowell, Tulare Pub;
Judith Wood, Tulare Co; Sherry Gomez, Kern.

Not present: Kings, Coalinga, Mariposa.

Guests: Ann Carson and Marlin McKeever, Ingram.

1. Meeting was called to order at 10:07 by Chair Melanie Wells.

2. Agenda was adopted (motion Wood, 2nd Matli)

3. Minutes of March 24, 1999 meeting were approved (motion Kuhn, 
2nd Baumgardner)

4. Ingram Demonstration: Marlin McKeever and Ann Carson gave a 
demonstration of Ingram product iPage, a web-based search and ordering
tool.  Discussion by committee followed regarding use and cost to 
member jurisdictions.

5. Plan of Service: Collection Development Committee has submitted plan
for 1999-2000.

6. Special Collections: It was recommended that a brochure describing
the special collections in each jurisdiction be created.  Information
on special collections could also be included on SJVLS website.  It 
was suggested that Dave DeLaurant be asked to pull information regarding
special collections from AWLNET.  Secretary Sherry Gomez will draft a 
letter to Sharon Vandercook to request this action.

7. Preservation of Materials: Lydia Kuhn will check on list of micro-
filmed newspapers and periodicals to find out what is available before 
the Committee makes a recommendation to preserve some of the Fresno
holdings.

8. Readers Advisory Tool:  Lydia Kuhn reported on the Gale Readers 
Advisory Tool.  The cost, based on population, is $495 per site or
$10,103 for unlimited use.  Judy Baumgardner has used a number of free
readers advisory websites.  Judy will have URLs for those sites at our
next meeting.

9. System Merge:  A discussion regarding the System Merge revealed that
this is a slow process and the Collection Development Committee needs 
to address questions to the Cataloging Committee.

10. Book Salepersons: Committe members shared their experiences with
various salespersons and companies.  Buying from a salesperson can be
a mixed bag.  Be a savvy buyer.  Ask questions and be forewarned about
prices, shipping, etc.

11. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 12:33
by Chair Wells.  Next meeting is scheduled for September 22, 1999 at
Hanford.
